Before we get started. I love technology. I am married to a techie geek and am excited for the kids to be coding when they’re six. I let them play with my iPad, my phone and watch TV, BUT I am old fashioned at heart and like things best with some jazz on Spotify and leaving them to it.  That’s why with the Christmas season coming up, trips to relatives you haven’t seen in the past year, I’m all about boredom-busting kids travel toys you can pick up and go. After all what do you do when there’s no wifi signal or the batteries die.

Enter Oskar + Ellen, a Swedish brand which makes the most beautiful traditional soft toys, which spark kids’ imaginations and learning. One of their most iconic buys is the 1-2-3- Counting Book, a gorgeous colourful book that includes lots of removable objects to learn numbers through play and encourage fine motor skills.

It closes with a zipper and has handles, which means we can carry it around with us, whether that’s upstairs to one of the bedrooms while I fold the laundry away or to a friend’s house when we want to keep the kids occupied. It really is charming!

The 1-2-3 Counting book is Lolo’s (17 months) in our house and MG gets a look in, when she’s feeling generous. Regardless of who’s playing it, the book will keep them quiet, occupied and entertained for absolutely ages. Enough time to read Grazia cover to cover, get through some emails, clean the whole kitchen…you name it, with the fish (number 9) being particularly popular. However, as the recommended age is 2.5, don’t leave a younger child unattended with it, as they are small parts.

  1. Keep Em Quiet Bag – From short visits, to long haul, these rucksacks contain entertainment and heathy snack products for when you need to keep the kids entertained a little bit longer.
  2. Bunchems On the Go Easel – Let them build 3D works of art from these crazy, colourful balls that stick together in this portable easel and holder. The best bit? Easy clean up and no mess!
  3. IKEA Mula Building Blocks – An oldie, but a goodie, younger babies will find so many uses for stacking cups, which are super easy to pop in a bag. They can put things inside them, stack them, roll them, hit them together and most fun, knock them down.
  4. Oskar & Ellen Dolls House – How cool is this? If they play with sound effects and dialogue, give them a whole world to navigate with this portable dolls house.
