I’m starting off this week with a my tips on how to share a room with your baby in style. I’ve been there twice and know what it feels like to have every room in the house invaded with baby gear, particularly mummy and daddy’s bedroom.
All the recommendations say cohabiting with newborns for the first 6 months is the ideal sleeping arrangement. Not only is it convenient for breastfeeding mums getting up to nurse through the night, but it reduces the risk of SIDS, helping the baby to regulate their breathing to match yours.

Baby gear aside, both Little MG (we shared a room for 12 months) and Baby Lolo (we share for 6 months and NO MORE!!) had to go. I missed the grown up retreat vibe of my bedroom, both were big snorers and I would also wake up with every moan and snuffle they made, meaning I never slept properly. Baby Lolo had to go that bit sooner, because I would sleep walk to her at her first cry and bring her into bed with me, where she would graze on my right boob on the hour and I inevitably was shattered with a massive, lopsided boob.

This is Baby Lolo’s upcycled Moses Basket. I simply used a brightly patterned pillowcase as the cot sheet.
Enough of the moaning, this is all about making the most of what is a pretty special parenting milestone – I mean getting through those early days is pretty epic. So, whether it’s for a few weeks, months or even years. If you’re gonna room in with your baby, you might as well do it in style. So enjoy my tips for stylishly sharing a room with your baby.
- Get a rug to asborb the sounds of you doing ‘that’ don’t-wake-the-baby tiptoe in or out of bed at night.
- Diptyque Baise will mask the smell of the stinkiest of poonami nappies and one pump seems to last for ever.
- Whether you’re using a moses basket, co-sleeper cot or traditional cot, why not get a baby bed with a little sleek and cool.
- If you’re going to use a more traditional moses basket, use a bold printed cotton pillowcase as your cot sheet. Simply insert the mattress into the pillowcase and tuck the corners underneath
- Sleepless nights coupled with postnatal hair loss can leave you looking and feeling a little worst for wear. I cannot recommend silk pillowcases enough, to give your skin and hair all the extra love and attention they can handle
- Avoid the room feeling too cramped by making the most of your storage solutions, utilise your bedside tables and wardrobe and get yourself a cot pocket to keep a selection of baby essentials in.
- We invested in a Sleigh Bed after having MG, the arc of the headboard is perfect for leaning back onto when you’re breastfeeding. If you don’t want to do this a V-shaped Orthopedic pillowcase is a good alternative.
- Pssst…this isn’t so much a style tip as a handy mother to mother one. Without a doubt, babies respond well to white noise. However, the crackling hushing sound is far too grating for me to sleep with, so I prefer wave, rain or ocean music to play in the background – it’s surprisingly relaxing.
